Borrow or sell?

Why Borrow Against Your Shares Instead of Selling Them?

  1. 01

Access capital without an immediate sale

Raise funds for a purchase or project while your eligible shares serve as collateral instead of being sold on the market.

  2. 02

Keep your long term investment strategy

Depending on the loan structure, financing may let you keep certain economic exposure to holdings you believe in.

  3. 03

    Finance new opportunities

Put the proceeds toward eligible uses such as business growth, equipment, property or an acquisition.

  4. 04

    Unlock concentrated wealth

A large position in one listed company can represent significant wealth that is not otherwise available as cash.

  5. 05

    Explore customized financing

Terms may be structured around the specific securities, the portfolio and what the transaction requires.

  6. 06

    Compare it with your alternatives

Borrowing is worth weighing against selling shares, a traditional bank loan or other sources of capital.

Understand the risks, too

A stock loan is real debt secured by real collateral. Before you borrow, be clear on these:

  • You can lose the collateral

If you do not meet the loan terms, the lender may keep or sell the pledged shares.

  • Share prices move

If the stock falls, you may need to add collateral or repay part of the loan, or shares may be sold.

  • Financing has a cost

Interest and fees reduce the benefit. Compare the full cost with selling or other financing.

  • Tax and legal effects vary

Borrowing does not always avoid taxes, preserve every shareholder right or guarantee you keep the shares. Get independent tax and legal advice.

Securities eligibility

Which shares may qualify?

Shares listed on the Bolsa de Valores de Lima may be reviewed, as can securities listed on major international exchanges, subject to the lender, the jurisdiction and applicable regulations. Every position is assessed individually.

What a review looks at

  • Exchange and listing status
  • Daily trading volume and liquidity
  • Price history and volatility
  • Size of the position and concentration
  • Ownership, lock up or transfer restrictions
  • Borrower, jurisdiction and regulatory requirements

Restricted, locked up or otherwise encumbered shares require individual legal and lender review. We cannot say in advance whether they can be used as collateral.

Any financing for shareholders in Peru is subject to the transaction structure, applicable Peruvian requirements and lender approval. South America Stock Loans is independent and not affiliated with the Bolsa de Valores de Lima.

Not Sure Whether Your Stock Qualifies?

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about stock loans.

What is a stock loan?

A stock loan is financing secured by eligible publicly traded shares. You pledge the shares as collateral and receive a loan for a portion of their market value, which you repay under the agreed terms.

Can I borrow money without selling my stock?

Often, yes. Some securities backed financing structures let you borrow against eligible holdings without an immediate outright sale. What happens to the shares during the loan depends on the terms of the transaction.

How much can I borrow against my shares?

It depends on the market value of the portfolio, its liquidity and concentration, which securities are eligible, and the lender's requirements. This website uses a 60% loan to value only as an illustration. Actual amounts may be lower or higher.

Ask Us About Your Shares
What types of stocks qualify for financing?

Publicly traded shares with transparent pricing and consistent trading volume are most likely to be considered. The exchange, liquidity, any ownership or transfer restrictions and the lender's underwriting all matter, and not every listed security will qualify.

Ask Us About Your Shares
Can I borrow against shares listed on the Bolsa de Valores de Lima?

Shares listed on the BVL may be reviewed. Eligibility is decided position by position and is never guaranteed.

Ask Us About Your Shares
Can I borrow against shares traded on international exchanges?

Certain internationally listed securities may be considered, depending on the exchange, the jurisdiction, the lender and applicable regulations.

What can I use the loan proceeds for?

Common purposes include business expansion, machinery and equipment, commercial real estate, acquisitions and working capital. Permitted uses are set by the lender, the loan agreement and applicable law.

Do I have to sell my shares to receive financing?

Not necessarily. It depends on the legal and collateral structure. Some loans use pledged shares held in custody, while other arrangements may involve different transfer or custody requirements. The loan agreement sets out exactly what happens to your shares.

What is a nonrecourse stock loan?

In certain structures, the lender's recourse may be limited to specified collateral, depending on the agreement and applicable law. Not every stock loan is nonrecourse, and the terms of each agreement control.

What happens if my stock decreases in value?

A falling share price can create a collateral shortfall. Depending on the agreement, you may need to post more collateral or repay part of the loan, and the lender may have the right to sell pledged shares. Other contractual consequences may also apply.

How long are stock loan terms?

Duration depends on the lender and the transaction. Terms are discussed during the review of your specific position.

What interest rates are available?

Pricing depends on the specific transaction, including the securities, the loan size and the structure. Rates can only be discussed after an individual review.

How long does it take to receive financing?

Timing depends on the securities review, underwriting, compliance checks, documentation and approval. We cannot guarantee a funding timeline, but a first conversation can happen quickly.

Can I use a stock loan to buy equipment or commercial property?

These may be eligible uses, depending on the financing agreement and the lender's requirements.

What information do you need to review my stock?

To begin, just the company name or ticker, the approximate value of your position and your contact details. More information is requested only if the review moves forward.

Ask Us About Your Shares
Is there a minimum portfolio value?

Our calculator starts at US$1 million for illustration. Whether a smaller or larger position can be financed depends on the securities and the lender, so ask us about your specific holding.
